Cock of the Woods
New York:
D.G. Elliot
1865.
(Cock of the Woods - Capercailzie, Tetrao Urogallus.) A fine hand colored lithograph of the Cock of the Woods (Capercailzie, Tetrao Urogallus) by D.G. Elliot (23 1/4 x 18 1/4 inches). A beautiful image from one of the most splendid of his great monographs, A Monograph of the Tetraoninae, or Family of the Grouse, published in New York in 1865. Elliot was known as one of the founders of the American Museum of Natural History in New York and of the American Ornithologist's Union. As a note of interest the print includes a statement of authorship in the lower left corner, reading " Drawn from Nature by D. G. Elliot, F.Z. S." - the initials standing for Fellow of the Zoological Society (of London). The name of J.T. Bowen, the lithographer, is printed to the lower right corner of the page. The print shows some pinhead size holes to bottom of page due to stiched binding, else the image is bright and clean, in near fine condition. nrfn.
