New York:
D.G. Elliot
1865.
(Sabine's Gouse. Bonasa Sabinei) A fine hand colored lithograph of Sabine's Gouse (Bonasa Sabinei) by D.G. Elliot (23 1/4 x 18 1/4 inches). A beautiful image from one of the most splendid of his great monographs, A Monograph of the Tetraoninae, or Family of the Grouse, published in New York in 1865. Elliot was known as one of the founders of the American Museum of Natural History in New York and of the American Ornithologist's Union. As a note of interest the print includes a statement of authorship in the lower left corner, reading " Drawn from Nature by D. G. Elliot, F.Z. S." - the initials standing for Fellow of the Zoological Society (of London). The name of J.T. Bowen, the lithographer, is printed to the lower right corner of the page. It also includes the initials of the artist (C.P.Th.) who traced the drawing onto the lithographic stone to the bottom right corner, just below the image. The print has a small stain to upper right corner, else the image is bright and clean, in near fine condition. nrfn.
