(Ruffed Grouse - Bonasa Umbellus) A fine handcolored lithograph of the Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa Umbellus) by D. G. Elliot (18 1/8 x 23 1/4). A beautiful image from the most splendid of Elliot's great monographs, 'A Monograph of the Phasianidae or Family of the Pheasants', pubsihed in Philadelphia 1870-72. D. G. Elliot (1835-1915) was known as one of the founders of the American Museum of Natural History in New York and of the American Ornithologist's Union. As a note of interest, the print includes a statement of authorship in the lower left corner: "Drawn from Nature by D.G. Elliot, F.Z.S." - the initials standing for Fellow of the Zoological Society. The name of J. T. Bowen, the lithographer, is printed to the lower right corner of the page. Also the name of the artist who traced the drawing onto the lithographic stone () is placed on the bottom right corner, just below the image. A 3 inch close tear and a creases along the left blank margin have been professionally repaired with archival tape. Still the image is bright and clean, in very good plus condition. vg+/--.
