Black and white engraving of Sargent's famous portrait of Theodore Roosevelt the twenty-sixth president of the United States (1901-1909). Prior to his presidency, Roosevelt served as the Governor of New York, the U.S. Secretary of the Navy, and served in the U.S. Army. Roosevelt was the Vice President to William McKinley and assumed the presidency after his death. Historians regard Theodore Roosevelt as the first modern president, because he significantly strengthened the executive branch. Roosevelt endowed the progressive movement by lending the esteem of the White House to government regulation, welfare legislation, and the conservation movement. Plate is 8 x 13 1/2 inches, margin is 16 x 19 1/2 iches, originally published in The White House Gallery of Official Portraits of the Presidents, contains a fac-similie of Roosevelt's signature to the bottom of the plate,chipping along the right edge of the margin, chipping to the bottom and top right and the top left corner of the margin, bumping to the top edge of the margin. vg+/--.
