Black and white engraving of Andrews's portrait of James Buchanan, the fifteenth president of the United States (1857-1861). He was a U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania and the U.S. Secretary of State under James K. Polk. He was the only president thus far to never marry. His niece, Harriet Lane, assumed the role of First Lady. Plate is 8 x 13 1/2 inches, margin is 16 x 19 1/2 iches, originally published in The White House Gallery of Official Portraits of the Presidents, contains a fac-similie of Buchanan's signature to the bottom of the plate, text to the back of concerning Buchanan's life and political carrer, also published in The White House Gallery of Official Portraits of the Presidents, 16 x 19 1/2 inches, text written by General Horatio C. King, former Adjacent-General of New York, chipping to the left and right side of the margins, binding holes to the left side of the margin, staining to the bottom right and left corners, foxing to the top left corner, two light vignettes to the margin in a sepia tone. vg+/--.
