Black and white engraving of Andrews's portrait of William Henry Harrison, the nineth president of the United States. He became the Northwest Territory's first delegate to Congress, and helped obtain legislation dividing the Territory into the Northwest and Indiana Territories. In 1801 he became Governor of the Indiana Territory, serving 12 years. He ran for president in 1840 on the Whig ticket and won the presidency in part due to his choice of Vice President, John Tyler. Harrison and Tyler essencially united the Whig party by appealing to differentiating political interests within the Whig Party. For example, Americans recognized Harrison as an anti-slavery candidate while Tyler allied with the political interests of those that were pro-slavery. William Henry Harrison died of what is thought to be viral pnemonia thirty days into his presidency, making him the first president to die in office. Plate is 8 1/2 x 13 inches, margin is 16 x 19 1/2 inches, originally published in The White House Gallery of Official Portraits of the US Presidents in 1901, contains a fac-similie of tyler's signature to the bottom of the plate, minor foxing to the edge of the right margin, text to the back concerning Tyler's life and political carrer, also published in The White House Gallery of Official Portraits of the Presidents, 16 x 19 1/2 inches, text written by Perry S. Heath. chipping to the left and right edges of the margin, binding holes to the left side of the margin, two light vignettes to the marginin a sepia tone. vg+/--.
