A black and white engraving illustrating the federal government's involvement in slavery during the Civil War. When the Secretary of War to General Sherman was directed to recruit services rom Port Royal, it brought into the lines a large number of women and children, who were fed by the government. 16 1/4 x 11 1/2 inches, originally published in "Harper's Pictorial History of the Civil War," the print occupies half of the plate, while text occupies the other half. The top side of the print reads "The Federal Government and Slaver," the top right indicates that it is page 203, chipping to the left side, the bottom right corner is cut, else in very good condition. There is a small chart of statistics regarding whites, free colored, and slaves in the Union, Confederacy, and border states in 1860 to the rear of the print. vg+/--.
