A black and white engraving of a Columbiad mounted as a mortar at Fort Sumter published in "Harper's Pictorial History of the Civil War," 16 1/4 x 11 1/2 inches. This print depicts a scene from Fort Sumter, the opening engagement in the Civil War. The columbiad depicted in this print was used by forces at Fort Sumter because of its ability to fire shells to long ranges, which made it beneficial for defending a seacoast in the nineteenth century. The text to the left side reads "Fort Sumter" the top left indicates that it is page 57, the title appears to the bottom of the image, chipping along the bottom of the print, foxing to the top right and bottom right corners, minor markings to the left edge of the print, else in very good condition. There is a scene of Fort Moultrie to the rear of the print. vg+/--.
