Originally published in Besler's "Hortus Eystettensis" in 1613. His work was the first to document and thoroughly illustrate a private garden. The garden was that of his patron Bishop Johann Conrad von Gemmingen. Besler spent 16 years meticulously copying the numerous species that had been collected for the garden from across the globe. From his drawings, master engravers created the 374 copper plates to be used for the folio volumes. This engraving is 19 x 15.5 in. on cotton linen paper with trimmed edges and is beautifully handcolored. Three short closed tears at bottom edge not effecting plate. Latin text to the verso. fn/--.
