First edition bound from original parts, second issue of volume 1. 3 volumes, large 8vo, bound in near contemporary 1/2 leather over pebbled cloth. Gilt ruled at edges of leather spine and corners. Gilt title and simple decoration to spines. Hand marbled edges and endpapers. Illustrated throughout with 155 fine full page color lithographic plates finished by hand, by William E. Hitchcock or Ralph Trembly after John James or John woodhouse Audubon, printed by J.T. Bowen (131) of Philadelphia or Nagel & Weingaertner (24) of New York. Audubon’s indispensible collaborator on the Quadrupeds project was the naturalist and Lutheran pastor John Bachman, a recognized authority on the subject in the United States. Following the success of his Birds of America, Audubon set out to create an equally impressive set to further cover the wildlife of North America. Though J.J. Audubon dies in 1851 ,publication of the work was finished in 1854 by his son John Woodhouse Audubon. vg/--.
