Munster, Sebastian
Nothern Rhine, Southern Holland, from Bonn to Rotterdam - 1572
Basel: Adam Petri 1572.

(Die dritt Tafel des Rheinstroms / inhaltend das nieder Teutschland) An original wood engraved map from the Cosmographia Universalis by Sebastian Munster (1489-1552), 15 1/2 x 12 1/4 inches. Published by the prestigious Basel printing firm of Adam Petri in 1572, the Cosmographia of Sebastian Munster must rank as the greatest geographical compendium of the period - an immensly detailed work illustrated with woodcut portraits, scenes town plans and panoramas and maps. Munster's particular geographic importance lies in the number of "new" maps he introduced and in the innovative, separate mapping of the four continents. This early regional map shows the stretch of the Rhine River from Bonn, Germany, to where it meets the North Sea in the Netherlands. The map also includes the Cities of Cologne, Utrecht and Amsterdam. It uncommonly shows the North to right of page; it has an embellished (German) title cartouche in verso. The map has minimal spots to left blank margins, center crease visible, else in remarkable condition, considering age. vg.
