Cassini, Giovanni Maria
Hawaii (Sandwich Islands) - 1798
Rome: (n.p.), 1798.
(Le Isole Di Sandwich Delineate Sulle Osservarioni Del Cap. Cook) Originally published in Cassini's three volume world atlas. This striking map was based on the British explorer James Cook's "Chart of the Sandwich Islands" which he drafted shortly be his death in 1779 at the hands of the Hawaiian natives. Cassini has illustrated the Captain's end in the decorative cartouche, though several points are inaccurate in his rendering such as the dress of the islanders and Capt. Cook. Nonetheless, the map itself is highly detailed, showing the course of Capt. Cook's voyage through the islands and the dates along their way. This map has hand outline coloring and is in excellent condition. There is scattered soling around the margins, and foxing around the largest Islands and the Cargouch. 19 3/4" x 14 1/2" within plate, 25 1/4" x 17 3/4" at margins. vg/--.
