Asia by Ortelius - c. 1575
Antwerp:
(n.p.)
c. 1575.
(Asiae Nova Descriptio) From Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terranum, the first modern world atlas. An excellent color depiction of Asia, including Japan far to the North, exagerated New Guinea and inaccurate eastern Russia. An early edition of the plate, the words Cum priuilegio can faintly be made out in the lower left corner, Farfana in the upper right is capitalized, and there is a labeled town of "Ara" North of Aden on the Arabian Peninsula. These were changed starting with the 1575 editions. Paper has been professionally restored, and has been repaired at both bottom corners and bottom of center line. Scattered soiling, mostly in upper right. 19 3/4" x 14 3/4" within plate, 22 1/2" x 17 1/4" at margins. vg-/--.
