Bowen, Emanuel
New and Accurate Map of Louisiana, With Part of Florida and Canada
London:
(n.p.)
1752.
An excellent hand colored and detailed map of French and British America by one of England's leading cartographers. The map includes european and Native American settlements, the latter of which abound in the Trans-Appalachian region. Rivers and some orography is shown and the Great Lakes figure prominently at the top. The information is quite accurate and unlike many mapmakers of the time, Bowen credits his accuracy to the top French cartographer Jacques Nicolas Bellin. Each of the British colonies is shown in a contrasting color, all limited by the Appalachians. This map is interesting in this, for this means that French Canada, or Louisiana, covers the vast majority of the continent. This ran contrary to the prevailing British position at the time, and in line with the French stance, a contrast which would very soon lead to the French and Indian War. An attractive baroque title cartouche adorns the top left corner, complete with a feathered Native American. Though politicially incorrect for his time and place, this is a very nice map of America from the middle of the eighteenth century. vg/--.
