Authentic James Monroe signature, no date, no place, signature of the fifth president of the United States (1817-1825) famous for the Monroe Doctrine, which declared that European powers could no longer interfere with the affairs of or colonize the newly independent nations in North and South America. The Monroe Doctrine has had significant influence over American foreign policy since its promulgation. Monroe served as Secretary of State from 1811-1817, Secretary of War from 1814-1815, and Governor of Virginia from 1799-1802, 1811. Contains a black and white engraving of James Monroe, artist unknown, published in The White House Gallery of Official Portraits of the Presidents in 1901, the plate is 8 x 12 and the margin is 17 1/2 x 22 1/2 inches, text concerning the highlights of Monroe's life and political career also published in The White House Gallery of Official Portraits of the Presidents to the back, text written by John R. Procter, text has some chipping to the left and right side, staining to the bottom left and right corners, two light vignettes to the margin in sepia tone.
