(Bowles's New One-Sheet Map of the Russian Empire in Europe comprehending also the West Part of the Empire in Asia from the St. D'Anville, of the Academy of Sciences at St. Petersburg) A scarce map of Russia west of the Ural Mountains, highlighting the empire's growth into Eastern Europe. The map, published in Bowles' atlas in London in 1785, spans from the Baltic and Black Seas in the West to the Urals in the East. The text of the map describes the conquests of the Russian Empire in the Ukraine, Romania, Scandinavia, and Caucasus. The text of the map is in English, making it a find for English speakers over maps published on the continent (mostly in French). The map is in very good condition, with only minor foxing in the margins, mostly to the bottom right. The plate measures 22 1/2" x 19 1/2" with wide margins. The map has been archivally framed. vg/--.
