Jefferson, Thomas
Message from the President of the United States, Accompanying Certain articles of agreement and cession, which have been entered into and signed by the Commissioners of the United States, and the Commissioners of the state of Georgia, In pursuance of
Washington DC:
1802.
In this agreement, the state of Georgia agreed to turn over to the United States, for the sum of $1,250,000.00, lands south of Tennessee and west of the “Chatahochie” River, for the express condition of creating the future state of Mississippi. Ultimately, Alabama would be created out of the territory as well. One of the conditions addresses the question of Georgia lands that had been allotted to Creek Indians by a treaty of 1798.
Though these lands were still heavily occupied by Native American tribes, the U.S. government planned for expansion. The pamphlet is in very good condition, uncut and unopened, with mild offsetting and fraying around the edges. It is signed "John Smith" at the top of the title page. vg/--.
